In a joint effort with our Brothers & Sisters from SEIU-1199 P, we have been continually sending care packages of donated snack items, drinks and personal hygiene items to our servicemen and women currently serving in Iraq. Our union members have also made monetary donations to defray the cost of shipping the packages.
The 213th Area Support Group, comprised of soldiers from PA, NY and NJ was selected as our project.  With the impending November, December and January 2007 holidays, we decided to have a cookie extravaganza.
Department of Health staff, some spouses and one child met at a local farm on a Saturday and began baking 3,065 cookies with monies donated to purchase ingredients.  The packages of cookies, along with Christmas cards and letters, were mailed in November.
We were surprised to learn that a flag was flown on the 16th of October over the 213th Area Support Group Headquarters Building at Logistical Support Area Anaconda, a base that is critical in fighting the Global War on Terrorism.  That same flag was sent to our local office along with a Certificate of Authenticity and a photo of the 213th Area Support Group, in recognition of our support.

In conjunction with AFSCME’s partnership with the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation “Build the Dream” campaign, Local 2450 donated a $200 monetary gift to assist the Memorial Foundation in the building of a memorial in Washington, DC to honor the life, work and legacy of Dr. King.

Our donation serves to honor Dr. King for what he did for the striking sanitation workers in Memphis, members of AFSCME Local 1733 (1968), and remind our nation and the world of how much remains to be done for all of us to realize his dream.
